- Jess Harper is riding shotgun on an $30,000 Army payroll being shipped to Green River on the stage and using the old road through the dry lands proves to be an almost fatal mistake when Shelly Stack and his men bushwhack the stage, helped by Scotty the stage driver. In a fit of rage when Jess fights back, Stack takes everything off the stage and leaves Scotty, Jess and the passengers to die. Stripping what they can from the stage the five set off across the desert trailing Stack and his men. It's a perilous journey with no food, no water, no horses and no weapons but it becomes evident that there is no honor among thieves as, one by one, they find bodies of the gang as they trek through the wasteland. For Jess Harper this journey will end one way only when he and the surviving passengers make it to Rawlings.—DarSpi
