People actually can't survive indefinitely on dialysis, how long they do survive depends on many different factors but on average dialysis extends a person's life by about 10 years. About 4,500 people die each year in the United States waiting for a kidney transplant, so despite the claim that it's a myth there really is a black market for organs. Although it is most likely a myth that people get abducted and wake up in a bathtub full of ice missing a kidney, as there are plenty of people willing to sell a kidney to a black market surgeon to make money, a person can easily get $40,000 or more for one. Now there have been reported cases of people being killed for organs that are harder to donate and acquire, such as hearts and livers.
