- Lucas Beyer has lived with the Cheyenne for ten years. When he accidentally kills his wife, he runs away to Laramie to escape the wrath of her family. Using an ancient Indian method, Troop hopes to find out what really happened.
- Lucas Beyer has lived with the Cheyenne and his Indian wife Mary for years as part of the tribe. When he pushes Mary in a fit of anger she hits her head on a rock and dies. The tribe sentences him to death at the hands of her brother Tonkawa who tracks Beyer to Laramie where he thinks he has escaped. Troop takes both men into custody when Tonkawa tries to shoot Beyer. After hearing their stories, Troop and Johnny take both men back to the Cheyenne camp. The chief Washita and Beyer agrees that if Beyer passes an Indian test he is free but if Beyer fails he goes back to Laramie for trial. Beyer must hold his finger steady in a bowl of water and not disturb the surface of the water while Washita questions him. Beyer fails the test and as he tries to escape Troop fires at him and Beyer falls to the ground dead - without a mark on him. Troop had fired over his head.—Anonymous
