Overbearing Nathan Adams comes home to have his sister-in-law, Anna, tell him his wife is dead - lying in the floor shot. He takes Anna to the Birdcage to find Troop. A sketch artist there is doing a big business. After Nathan tells his story, the artist, Beebee Williams, states he saw a man exit the Adams house and he can draw him. The picture is of Jim Martin who has no alibi. At the jail Beebee and Anna identify Jim. At trial Anna says she doesn't know what happened leaving the jury to decide not guilty. Nathan, however, swears to kill Jim. Troop realizes the truth is the only answer and questions Beebee. He wants revenge against Jim for wrongly identifying his brother leading to his lynching and Beebee's near death. Troop brings in Anna who confesses she accidentally shot her sister moving a loaded rifle and was afraid of Nathan and to say what happened.
