When Earp wanders into a saloon, he spots his old buffalo hunter friend Jake Caster who lives with his wife's tribe, the Cheyenne. Earp informs Jake who can't read that he must turn in his gun followed by talk of old times. Earp learns Jake's wife is dead but Jake is elusive as to why he is in Dodge City. While talking, Jake has his eye on soldiers from Fort Dodge who start to get out of control. Earp breaks up the argument but Jake leaves. Later that night Sergeant McCafferty is found dead Indian style with his hair removed and moccasin tracks nearby. Earp tracks down Jake who is sleeping outdoors but Jake won't admit the killing. Earp returns the body to Fort Dodge hoping for help from the Colonel but he won't help. Earp happens to meet Mrs. McCafferty who tells Earp the only event in Sgt. McCafferty's life he hated was his involvement in the Sandy Creek Massacre. Earp returns to Dodge City where barricades are put up to stop the soldiers. Earp learns McCafferty killed Jake's wife and boy at Sandy Creek. When the soldiers arrive to rip up Dodge City, Jake comes forward to admit what he did. Mrs. McCafferty confronts Jake with a derringer asking why. When Earp states the reason, everyone melts away.
