Doc Holliday's illness is worse with Dr. McCarty saying he can do more unless Doc changes his habits. Frustrated Kate tells Doc she is leaving as she can't handle his lifestyle anymore. Earp convinces Doc he needs to reform to keep Kate as they need each other. Doc decides to try Earp's idea by swearing off gambling, liquor, and carrying a gun. The first two may extend Doc's life but the last one may shorten it given his enemies. Doc confronts Dan Leving in Doc's saloon when Leving tries to sell bad land to a young Ralph Stebbins and his wife Marci. When Leving confronts the unarmed Doc, Earp steps in to help. Doc takes Ralph and Marci under his wing. Kate packing to leave is surprised but pleased at the report from the Stebbins about Doc. However, Earp keeps having to protect Doc from several enemies including Leving while Judge Tobin and Mayor Kelley don't believe Doc has changed. Kate soon realizes Doc is miserable under the new conditions plus his life is in danger forcing a change in both Doc and Kate as they help the Stebbins.
