The Robinsons and Major West (but not Smith) are indicted for vaguely defined space-crimes and face an alien tribunal equipped with a memory reading machine. I suspect the episode was developed to save on production costs as it makes use of season one footage via the 'memory reader' (oddly, memories are occasionally from a perspective at which the 'rememberer' could not possibly have been) and many of the members of the alien court were recycled from previous episodes (in which they were simply monsters, not presumably sentient creatures capable of juris prudence). The episode is largely Smith-focused with lots of comedic cowardliness and alliterative aspersions, and the resolution to the Robinson's legal woes is amusing if not overly original (it would have been hilarious if they had used the same strategy as Kryten used in the 'Red Dwarf' episode 'Justice' (1981)). Interesting to compare the colourful, cartoon-like look of the second season (notably the pastel-coloured velour costumes) with the 'hard' science-fiction look of the early first season (as seen in the clips).
