A Holiday Affair to Remember!
Sylviastel3 February 2019
Phyllis Thaxter played a young widowed mother who gets two proposals for marriage in this charming theatre episode. The episode is dated now but the Lux Theatre lasted seven seasons in providing theatre to audiences nationwide. Phyllis Thaxter was a brilliant actress of her time period.

About as necessary as a tennis racket for your pet goldfish.

1949's "Holiday Affair" is one of the best Christmas films you can find. It's clever, features an amazing child actor AND is a terrific romance. I can't say enough positive things about this film. However, despite it being a classic, someone thought it would be a great idea to remake the film as a one-hour TV show (for the "Lux Theater"). In hindsight, it wasn't a good idea.

The first problem is the casting. Phyllis Thaxter is hardly an adequate replacement for Janet Leigh and Scott Brady is hardly a replacement for Robert Mitchum...who were in the original film. Plus, to make the story fit the time slot, it was streamlined and loses much of its charm.

Overall, a decent enough try but a TV program that isn't worth seeing since the 1949 movie is often shown each year on Turner Classic Movies.
