***SPOILERS*** M Squad's Let. Det. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin, goes undercover as Detroit hoodlum and jewelry smuggler Frank Singleton to smash a ring of jewel thieves in Chicago and almost ends up losing his life in doing it. It's the head jewel thief Bert "Silky" Silk, Stan Irwin, who uses unsuspecting and desperate for money young women to pose as his wife who's behind a string of jewel robberies in the City of Chicago. That's by "Silky" getting the jewelers to drop their guard, in buying his "wife or wives" very expensive birthday presents where money is no object and then bopping them over the head when, with the jewels out on display, their backs is turned.

Putting on an act as being interested in pawning of some $200,000.00 in hot ice, or jewelry, Ballinger/Singelton contacts "Silky" through one of his fronts, his female drinking buddy, Lisa Grange, Jean Willis, and makes a deal with him that's to take place two days later. It's Lisa who gets cold feet when she finds out that "Silky" and his partner and hit-man Jack Parness, Al Hodge, are not only planning to take the stolen jewels off Ballinger/Singleton's hands but to ice or whack him after the transaction is made.

****SPOILERS**** Let. Det. Ballinger not taking any chances has his boss Capt. Gray, Paul Newlan, and a squad of Chicago police cover his back and when "Silky" & Parness are about to do him in the trap, by Capt. Grey, is sprung on the two of them. It's just when "Silky" was about to have Ballinger done in. It's then that Capt. Grey & Co. sprung into action turning the two would be cop killers into future cell-mates in the hard time Illinois State Prison.
