From the looks of him he already had a few belts from somewhere else

***SPOILERS*** Let. Det. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin, has the job of protecting the late Harry Conkin's, Robert Karnes, wife Martha, Nan Leslie, who's to testify in his place in front of a Congressional Crime Committee hearing in D.C on corruption in the trucking business. It's Martha's husband Harry who was killed with a car bomb as he was on his way to the airport to testify that had her more then willingly take his place. Just before Martha was to testify she gets a phone call from her "late" husband Harry telling her everything is all right and not to worry. As it turned out the voice of Harry was on a tape recording used by rival truck owner Martin "Lover-boy" Bodie, Ed Cramer, in trying to get her to crack up and be dismissed by being judged to be mentally unstable as a witness. It was "Lover-Boy" who was trying to get his hands on the late Harry Corkin's trucking business who had him whacked, with a planted bomb in his car, when he refused to cave or give into him.

Let. Ballinger who knows that Bodie is behind both Conkin's murder and the phony phone calls made to Martha needs to get evidence by having the phone calls traced. It takes a while but Bodie finally slips up when his flunky, who's doing the calling, stays on too long for the police to get a trace on the call. As we and Let. Ballinger soon find out is that there's a fly in the ointment, or spy, in the Conkin house who's feeding Bodie all the information he needs to stay ahead of the police. And that fly or spy after being exposed soon turns on Bodie when the truth is reviled who he or she really is.

***SPOILERS*** It turned that Martha's sister or was it her sister in law, I couldn't quite figure out which one she was, Ruth Webster, Carole Mathews, was working with her boyfriend Martin Bodie to have him take over her husband's trucking company. What Ruth didn't realize is just how far Bodie would go to get his hands on trucking company and when confronted with the evidence by Let. Ballinger that she may well end up frying together with her accomplice and lover Martin Bodie in her being strapped in the electric chair if she doesn't come clean she turned rat fink on him.
