Saw this on Talking Pictures channel (UK - old films and TV) who are running all 4 of the original Maigret series (BBC, early 60s). And it's a bit unusual, Maigret, on his way to a fishing holiday, gets shot as he takes a shortcut through some woods.
He gets patched up, but is looking forward to a week or two in bed, then his wife turns up, to add some extra care (to his disgust, limiting access to a pipe!). She then gets more to do, acting as his 'eyes and ears' round the town - his usual team aren't in this one much, apart from some phone research by Lucas, those calls being listened into by the hotel owner, who relays the info to the top people in the town!
A discarded book of matches offers a big clue, and Maigret sends his wife off to Bordeaux, to seek out a relative of some of those who apparently know more than they're saying. Gradually Maigret settles the intrigue, but the revelations come too late for some. Eagle-eyed viewers will spot Reggie Perrin's wife, in an early role.
