A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH - "The Riley Brand" – 1966 This is episode 23 of the 1965-66 western series, A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH. The series starred Robert Horton. Horton is a man who suffered the loss of his memory after receiving a head wound. He is now searching the west for clues as to his identity.

Horton rides into a small Nevada town and hits the livery stable. He tells the owner, E. Cook Jr. that he wants to bed down his horse for the night. Cook looks at Horton and asks if Horton is finally here to pick up the saddle he left the year before.

Needless to say Horton has no memory of the saddle or being there before. The saddle is marked with a distinctive brand mark burned into the leather. "The Riley Ranch about 100 miles north of here used that brand." Says Cook. Horton pays off the man and heads north.

Horton gets to the ranch house and is meet by two men, Warren Stevens and DeForest Kelly. When Horton shows them the saddle and asks about the markings, guns are quickly pulled on him. "We hang horse thieves around here!" Says Stevens to the startled Horton.

This plan is ended when ranch owner, Joanna Pettet arrives on the scene. She looks at the saddle and says it is her long lost brother's saddle. Years before, the ranch had been attacked by Indians and Pettet's parents killed and her brother had vanished.

Stevens is not amused with this turn of events. He wants to take control of the ranch. Horton stays the night but tells Pettet he will be moving on in the morning. He has a possible lead in Virginia City as to his identity. He is pretty sure he is not Pettet's brother.

When Horton rides off in the morning, Stevens sends Kelly after him with orders to kill him. This does come off the way Steven intended and Kelly eats a gut full of lead. Horton rides back to the ranch to straighten out Stevens, which results in more lead being thrown. Stevens gets his just deserts with several unneeded holes added to his body.

Horton mounts up again and heads for Virginia City. (B/W)
