Peggy Works at a Department Store
Sylviastel27 April 2009
All Peggy wants is a VCR which everybody was getting back in the day but Al refuses to buy one. Marcy has a good idea that Peggy gets a job. To Peggy, that's a bad idea. She gets a job working in the clock department at a large department store with guest star and boss played by Ernie Sabella. It's not a bad episode. The reasoning for Peggy to get a VCR is because she wants to watch Oprah and tape Phil. Peggy was not made to work and that's why she got married to lounge around all day and watch television. It's up to Al and the family to convince Peggy to quit her job or lose it. For Al, he's happy that somebody else is bringing in the income to help cut costs around the house.

Peggy clocks on.

Peggy Sue Got Work highlights just how much times have changed since 1987. Peggy is appalled at the suggestion by Marcy that she gets a job, but it seems to be the only way she can get the VCR that she needs to tape Phil while Oprah is on. Not only is the VCR a relic of the past, but the idea that the wife stays at home while the man earns the crust is also antiquated.

Peggy gets a job working in the clock department at Muldins store, and she hates it, but she isn't about to quit, because Al would use it against her. Al wants her to quit, but won't ask her, because she'll use it against him. In the end, Kelly and Bud ask her to quit - but only because Al and Peggy have both paid them to do so.

Not the greatest episode - the battle of the sexes plot is so outdated, and there aren't that many memorable lines of dialogue. I laughed once - when Al says 'The name on the check says Al Bumby' - and even that isn't all that funny.
