Steve leaves Marcy for good!
Sylviastel14 June 2009
Steve is gone and off to Yosemite or some national park to work as a park ranger leaving Marcy alone. Marcy does not deal with the loneliness quite well. She spends her nights on the Bundy couch and Bud has the hots for her and tries to seduce her and failing miserably at it. Peggy wants to go on vacation and gets Marcy to sell something of Steve and she sells something of Al's. Of course, it's the living room television which devastates Al. I love the lines where he calls the police to report his missing television and "oh yeah, my wife is gone too." When they order pizza, Al's credit card is broke. Marcy and Peggy went to Las Vegas and are broke within minutes of their arrival.

Part one sets the scene but doesn't deliver the laughs.

Steve finally plucks up the courage to leave Marcy and go to Yosemite to become a park ranger. Peggy consoles her neighbour and suggests a vacation to take her mind off things. After selling the TV, Peggy accompanies Marcy to Las Vegas where the girls lose all their money and their plane tickets home. Al discovers where they are when his credit card is refused, Peggy having maxed it out, losing a total of $5000. Furious, Al and the kids head for Vegas...

I'm not a big fan of the show's two-parters, the first half usually more focussed on setting the scene than delivering the laughs. Sure enough, You Gotta Know When to Hold Them: Part 1 is merely paving the way for You Gotta Know When to Fold Them: Part 2, which is where the real fun happens.

Also, this is the first episode where the audience whoops, cheers and claps when the characters first appear, which is rather annoying - it's going to take some getting used to.
