Okay, the title is a bit of an exaggeration. But there's nothing wrong with Roger Moore as the third Maverick. Yes, he has big shoes to fill, replacing the departing James Garner. And there's a lot of initial exposition to explain why Texan Beau (like Moore) has an English accent.
Fortunately, writer Ron Bishop blends it all in, and even has a bit of fun with the concept. Both by making Beau the inadvertent "white sheep" of the Maverick family, and loading in a bunch of other English tropes and accents. We get Freddie the English scoundrel, Herbert the English razor-wielding throat cutter, the Marquis the Colonel Blimp-ish overbearing English lord, and Molly the Cockney barmaid. There's a parody of "My Fair Lady", and we see Beau effortlessly take command of Herbert and his gang, arranging his own ransom to make a quick $5,000.
Jack Kelly is perhaps a little too broad with the comedy. Or maybe it's the script. We get the two-time scene of Bart drawing to a winning poker hand and then being called away by a wire. There's the scene where him and the Marquis are paddling a canoe, and Kelly flails at his co-star with a paddle. But overall, "The Bundle from Britain" is a decent episode with a good performance by Moore.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
