Last Ride for Jay and Sajid
wes-connors10 February 2015
Acting on one of the best tips that would lead to his missing father, Terry (Jay North) arrives in a village where he believes his tiger hunting dad Hugh Bowen is hospitalized. His father is not there. Terry runs off and is found by companion Raji (Sajid Khan) is a very distressed state. The teenagers and Maya the elephant go back to the village for food. They meet American doctor E.J. Andre (as Whitney Markham), who is taking care of the poor villagers. Terry is clearly exhibiting severe depression due to months of searching. Raji tells Mr. Andre his story, leading to brief flashbacks from the first episode, and asks the doctor to restore Terry to his former mental health...

Meanwhile, journalist Mort Mills (as Frank Sanders) is searching for a mysteriously missing scientist...

This was the eighteenth, and final original televised episode of the "Maya" TV series...

It was certainly popular with kids, who liked watching Mr. North and Mr. Khan atop their elephant in weekly adventures. However, the program was up against stiff competition. In particular, Jackie Gleason returned to "Honeymooners" segments; and, taking away a major "Maya" advantage, the new shows were being presented in color. "The Legend of Whitney Markham" is a fine closing episode; it includes a flashback, but does not "end" the situation (the film does reveal Mr. Bowen's whereabouts). This episode aims a little too high, but is nicely written by Norman Katkov. And, producer-director Herbert Coleman does a good job wrapping the series.

****** The Legend of Whitney Markham (2/10/68) Herbert Coleman ~ Jay North, Sajid Khan, E.J. Andre, Mort Mills
