Putting on airs

The citizens of Mayberry break into a mad dash to the post office to see a letter to the city from the state department. Sam is appointed the appropriate person to open the letter. It is an invitation for Mayberry to join their sister cities program, a measure of better understanding between foreign countries. Puerto Bello, Mexico is selected on the basis of similar size and interests. Mayberry agrees and extends an invitation to welcome delegates from Puerto Bello to cement their friendship. Puerto Bello feels the same about a warm friendship between the two. Mayberry welcomes Mayor Nunez (Raoul De Leon) and his right-hand man Santos (Mexican character actor Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez). They gift the people of Mayberry an expensive, bejeweled, sterling silver chalice. It pales in comparison to the needlepoint sampler Aunt Bee had prepared as their gift, and they worry to find a gift of equal value while entertaining them in high style. A revelation is soon made.

This episode doesn't offer much despite an attempted moral message.

Contrived but decent

This episode is nothing fantastic but it is nice in one sense. It seems that there is an underlying lesson or moral to the story-as was almost always the case in the original black-and- white Andy Griffith Show.

So many of the RFD shows are just so bland and boring compared to the original show. This episode is probably average or slightly above average in the RFD series.

Strong end to season 1

Imaginative script with some funny twists and turns. Raoul De Leon as Nunez stood out in the Mexican city officials as the most humorous. Mayberry citizens have to be the most civic-minded in all classic TV. The US government was going to flip the bill for everything so why not go high on the hog with meals, accommodations, and parties. Odd, no Mayor is ever mentioned. Dimwit Goober on the city council?

Funniest parts were Goober Pyle (George Lindsey) serving as the waiter for the meal at the Jones home. Then the hysterical dancing of Goober with pretty Millie Swanson (Arlene Golonka).

I rated season 1's episodes an average of 6.8/10. Not bad for a show that's lost it's two stars.
