Different opinions will abound in this episode

Here is an episode that viewers are going to have very different opinions. If you are just looking for comedy, of any value, then you may like this show. However, if you are looking for a nice entertaining story then this show does not fit the bill. It depends on how you look at the episode that will determine if you liked, or disliked, the final production of this mid-season three show.

The main part of the story involves Captain Binghamton's niece, Cynthia Prentice (Marlo Thomas), happens on the island when the plane she is riding needs to be refueled. Ms Prentice studies anthropology and is always reading or looking for special items in the line of study. For some reason she believes that Ensign Parker would make a very interesting study and tells her uncle, Binghamton, that she wants to be with him for a long time.

Binghamton takes this as she want to marry him. Binghamton cannot have any of this and sets out, with McHale's help, to stop the marriage. And with Parker dressing-up and running around like an ape man, it will not be long before the real intentions are known.

This story was difficult to understand on so many levels. One of the questions was why a plane that was only to refuel seem to drop Binghamton's niece off for a long stay? And the fact that Binghamton was sending Parker to a far away island for punishment just disappeared by the end of the show. There are many holes in this story that seem not to make sense. Throw in some questionable ape-man acting by Tim Conway and you have to choose which side of the line you want to stand. It is either a good fun comedy or a clumsy attempt at humor. The only real bright sport was the beautiful Marlo Thomas. She is a perfect ten in this episode.

I love that girl (Marlo Thomas) quiz
FlushingCaps17 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Once again Captain Binghamton plans to transfer Chuck to some remote island, where he figures the bumbling ensign will not pester him any more. On leaving the captain's office, Chuck and the skipper bump into-literally, the captain's niece, Cynthia.

Cynthia is played by Danny Thomas's daughter, Marlo, which leads to a trivia question of sorts: Who was the first actor to say "I love that girl" when speaking about Marlo Thomas in the guise of his character on TV: A) Ted Bessell (as boyfriend Don Hollinger on "That Girl"; B) Lew Parker (as Lew Marie, father of Ann Marie); C) Danny Thomas (her father); or D) Joe Flynn (as Captain Binghamton on McHale's Navy.

OK, it wouldn't really make for a great trivial question, but the captain did say that about his "niece" in this episode, which of course aired almost a year before "That Girl" premiered.

To get Cynthia to persuade her uncle to cancel Chuck's transfer, the crew arranges for him to spend time with her-luring Elroy Carpenter away while he was boring her on an arranged date during what was supposed to be a short refueling stop for her. Chuck was his usual clumsy self, sitting on a park bench, lighting two cigarettes together to share one with her, getting his finger stuck in a knothole, etc.

Cynthia can't wait to get Chuck back to her guest quarters, which amazes the crew watching from the woods nearby. What they don't know is that she isn't interested in Chuck in anything other than her anthropology studies, believing the shape of his head to suggest Cro-Magnon Man. Well, they get her to go to the captain to cancel the transfer so she can spend time studying him-I guess she'll just stay in this war zone longer than planned. But the captain gets the notion that she might marry Parker, and has this really wild nightmare about Chuck and Cynthia getting married and moving into his house after the war. McHale and the whole crew (minus Fuji, who the captain doesn't know about) are also on the scene, announcing they are moving into the guest house.

So now McHale comes up with plan B-for Parker to offend Cynthia so she'll call off the wedding and the captain will be grateful enough to let Parker stay with the 73. This involves a leopard suit and caveman-like behavior for Parker as he chases Cynthia all around his hut.

Of course Parker gets to stay. Cynthia shows that she is repulsed when hearing that her uncle actually thought she might want to marry him. She only wanted to study him.

I thought the caveman scenes were ridiculous, Parker jumping on the table, calling out, "Me want woman. Arrrh!" and such were not believable. McHale tried to explain to Cynthia that they keep him locked up until after dark, but she first met the normal Mr. Parker during the daytime in the captain's office.

Too many funny moments for a bad score, too much dumbness for a good one = a 5.
