Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters a study to find Tipton, seated in a high backed chair at his desk, perusing a photograph album. Only Tipton's left hand is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, I've just been wallowing in nostalgia.

Michael Anthony : I beg your pardon, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Looking over these photos of my family. Do you have a family album, Mike?

Michael Anthony : Why, yes, of course, sir. Doesn't everybody?

John Beresford Tipton : Oh, not everybody. There are some people in the world that are alone. No family, no albums - no one to share anything with.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire.

[Anthony accepts the envelope and nods]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  For 25 years, Charles Bradwell had lived alone in the same room and worked as janitor at the same school in a far eastern city. He had no one to talk to, except the children. And they were so busy during the day that the only time he could talk to them was at night.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was Executive Secretary to the multibillionaire John Beresford Tipton. Among my duties was the unique job of delivering $1,000,000, which Mr. Tipton frequently gave away, tax-free, to a total stranger. From his fabulous 60,000-acre estate, Silverstone, Mr. Tipton carried on his study of human nature. Every subject in his vast storage of knowledge was material for close analysis and was always related to the behavior and destiny of man.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony appears in a school locker room, where the janitor is sweeping up after school]  Are you Charles N. Bradwell?

    Charles Bradwell : Yes.

Michael Anthony : I have something of great importance to discuss with you. My name is Michael Anthony.

Charles Bradwell : Oh, I'm certainly glad you came.

    [Gets a chair for Anthony]

Charles Bradwell : I mentioned to Henry that I would like to meet you. I'm surprised that you think it's important enough to discuss with matter with me.

Michael Anthony : I beg your pardon?

Charles Bradwell : You have a right to be proud of a son like Henry, and I know you want to do what's proper for him.

Michael Anthony : Mr. Bradwell, I don't think you understand.

Charles Bradwell : Oh, I understand alright. I take a beer myself every Friday night, but you family men can't let yours go, like us bachelors.

Michael Anthony : If you will be so kind as to give me one uninterrupted moment,

    [Opens briefcase]

    Michael Anthony : I will give you a cashier's check for $1,000,000

    [Displays check]

Charles Bradwell : Oh, John Barleycorn really has got you, doesn't he, boy?

    [Anthony hands check to Bradwell]

Michael Anthony : Mr. Bradwell, aside from the fact that I'm a temperate man and don't even live in this city, I'm certainly not the father of a son named Henry.

Charles Bradwell : You're not Henry Anthony's father?

    Michael Anthony : No.

    Charles Bradwell : Oh.

Michael Anthony : So now, suppose we conclude our business, Mr. Bradwell? This documents states that you promise not to reveal, on penalty of forfeiture, the exact amount or the source of this money, except to your wife, in the event you marry.

    Charles Bradwell : It's a cashier's check.

Michael Anthony : Yes, and it is yours to do with as you please, if you will sign this release.

[Offers pen and document and Bradwell signs]

Charles Bradwell : But why? Who'd give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : [Anthony puts the agreement back into his briefcase]  I'm sorry, I can't tell you that. The donor wishes to remain anonymous. Good bye and good luck, and give my regards to Henry Anthony.
