Ernest Anderson: J. B. - League Club Manager

Quotes

  • Henry Banning : [Meeting J.B. outside a service entrance]  You waiting for a little action, J.B.?

    J. B. - League Club Manager : I was just waiting for you.

Henry Banning : Lead on, lead on.

Michael Anthony : [as J.B. and Banning start to enter the club]  Mr. Banning?

    Henry Banning : Yes.

Michael Anthony : Mr. Henry Banning?

Henry Banning : You have the advantage on me, sir.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. Mr. Banning, I have something for you

[Begins to open a briefcase, then realizes J.B. is still present]

Henry Banning : Oh, yes, I don't know what you are referring to, counselor, but I'm sure we can work something out - a little monthly payment.

[Reaching into his pocket to extract a couple of coins, which he hands to J.B]

Henry Banning : There you are, J.B.

    J. B. - League Club Manager : Thank you. I'll deduct this on your account.

Henry Banning : Oh, thank you.

[JB. goes into the building, leaving Banning and Anthony alone]

Henry Banning : Deductions, entertainment, taxes. A man in my bracket, it's tough. I'm absolutely helpless. What can I do for you, counselor?

Michael Anthony : I'm not a lawyer, Mr. Banning.

    [Displaying check]

Michael Anthony : I have a cashier's check in your name for $1,000,000.

Henry Banning : [Examining check]  Hits you right in the eye. $1,000,000. Made out to the man you present it to. Good touch. Take some advice...

Michael Anthony : Mr. Banning, I don't think you understand. This check is real.

Henry Banning : Oh, that's just the spirit! Hang right in there! Keep pitching. Would you take some advice from an old hand. This check is trouble

    [Displaying check to Anthony]

Henry Banning : You have to have 'non-negotiable' right across the front of this.

Michael Anthony : [Becoming a bit agitated]  That's what I'm trying to tell you, Mr. Banning. It is negotiable!

Henry Banning : Oh, I like your stuff, sonny. It makes an old fire horse like me long for the clang of the bell.

Michael Anthony : [Angrily]  Mr. Banning, I am not a confidence man. This is a cashier's check from an anonymous donor for $1,000,000 on which the tax has already been paid.

    [Retrieving document from briefcase]

Michael Anthony : If you want it, you must sign this agreement in which you promise, on penalty for forfeiture, never to reveal the exact amount or the way in which you received it, except to your wife, and since I know you are not married, that means to nobody!

    [Holding pen for signature]

Michael Anthony : You may take it or leave it, Mr. Banning.

    [Banning signs]

Michael Anthony : Thank you, Mr. Banning.

    [Sarcastically]

Michael Anthony : I hope you have the best of luck.

    [Storms off]

Henry Banning : Oh, he'll need watching. A little shifty look.
