Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the study where he finds Tipton, seated in a high backed chair at his desk, reviewing a photo album of women's faces. Only Tipton's left hand is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Ever realize there are fashions in faces, Mike?

    Michael Anthony : Faces?

John Beresford Tipton : I don't mean that women of any period looked alike. But in each fashion cycle, there was a fashionable face - an ideal. Here, take a look, Mike.

[Tipton displays a picture of a Roman-era female]

John Beresford Tipton : Now this one's a fashionable Roman pinup.

[Tipton turns the page to exhibit a late 1800s woman]

John Beresford Tipton : Then the Gibson Girl, who captured the last century.

[Tipton turns the page and reveals the face of soon-to-be- millionaire Candy Crowley]

John Beresford Tipton : And here she is, Mike - today's face.

Michael Anthony : Lovely girl. Lovely.

John Beresford Tipton : You're going to meet her, Mike.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : She's our new millionaire.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers, while reviewing a file]  She was christened Alice Candace Horton. It was not until shortly before she started to be called 'The Face' that this young lady became Candy Caldwell.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony has just begun to complete a questionnaire and is reading the queries aloud]  Name: Michael Anthony. Occupation: ?

[Is startled to notice the viewers]

Michael Anthony : Oh, how do you do?

    [Explaining the questionnaire]

Michael Anthony : For the reunion bulletin, my college alumni association wants to know my occupation. For many years, a truthful answer would have been, 'Occupation: creating millionaires.' To hundreds of strangers, I handed cashier's checks for $1,000,000. No, it wasn't my money. I was executive secretary to the multibillionaire John Beresford Tipton, whose strange hobby it was to give these checks to persons who didn't know he existed, who never did learn the source of their incredible good fortune. At Silverstone, Mr. Tipton lived in seclusion, but he knew everything that went on in the world outside Silverstone's walls, from the international money markets, to the current fads and fashions.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony knocks at the door of Candy Caldwell, who, after disfigurement in an auto accident, runs and hides out of sight of the doorway. Her sister opens the door]  Miss Alice Horton?

    Maxine : I'm her sister.

Michael Anthony : Is your sister at home? My name is Michael Anthony. I have an urgent matter I must discuss with her in private.

Candy Caldwell : [Whispers]  Max, no.

Maxine : Oh, ah, yes, she is here, but, uh, would you excuse me just a minute?

    [Closes door]

Candy Caldwell : Send him away.

Maxine : No, I think you should see him. I have a feeling he's an insurance adjustor. Maybe Kerry had another policy. Come on.

[Candy covers half of her face with a scarf while Max opens the door]

Maxine : Won't you come in?

    [Anthony enters]

Maxine : Alice, this is Mr. Anthony. Excuse me, please.

    [Max departs]

Michael Anthony : You are Miss Alice Horton, known professionally as Candy Caldwell?

Candy Caldwell : Yes. What was you want to see me about?

Michael Anthony : Miss Horton, I represent an anonymous donor who is making you an outright gift of $1,000,000.

    [Candy is shocked]

Michael Anthony : And the donor has paid the taxes.

Candy Caldwell : Well, I don't believe you. Nobody would...

    [Stops]

Candy Caldwell : Oh, has this got something to do with my accident?

Michael Anthony : The donor selected you as the recipient of this gift prior to the accident.

Candy Caldwell : [It suddenly dawns on Candy]  Oh, he wanted to meet me. That's very funny. In fact, it's hilarious. Tell him it isn't worth a million dollars these days. Tell him 'The Face' is dead. It's a gargoyle now! Tell him to give his money to charity. Please, go away.

Michael Anthony : Miss Horton, my employer does not seek any personal contact with you. On the contrary, he has taken every possible step to safeguard his anonymity.

    [Presenting a document]

Michael Anthony : To that end, I must ask you to sign this paper pledging yourself to reveal to no one the exact amount of this gift or the circumstances under which you received it.

Candy Caldwell : [Examining the agreement]  You mean, that's all? All I have to do is just not tell anybody?

Michael Anthony : Precisely, Miss Horton. If you marry, you may tell your husband about your good fortune.

Candy Caldwell : Married, a freak like...

    [Stops and thinks]

Candy Caldwell : A million dollars. How soon would I get it?

Michael Anthony : As soon as you sign this pledge.

Candy Caldwell : Do you have a pen?

[Anthony furnishes a pen and Candy signs]

Michael Anthony : [Giving Candy the check]  Thank you, Miss Horton. And here is your check.
