Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Viewers see Michael Anthony enter the Tipton library, where he discovers Tipton seated in a high-backed chair at his desk, holding up for scrutiny a paper document. Only Tipton's left arm is visible]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : [Showing document to Anthony]  Know what this is, Mike?

Michael Anthony : It looks like an old theater program of some sort, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles and hands document to Anthony]  No, it's one of the original ballots that elected Abraham Lincoln in 1860.

Michael Anthony : [Carefully reviewing the ballot, Anthony is fascinated]  Very interesting.

John Beresford Tipton : The ballot system of voting is part of our American way of life, and political machines spring into being in an attempt to control the ballot. Sometimes, to fight a political machine was seen as foolhardy as David fighting Goliath.

[Anthony returns the ballot to the desk. Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : I want you to give this to a modern David. Let's see how he would use a million dollars.

[Anthony accepts the envelope, smiles, and bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony rings the doorbell of David Tremayne at a late hour after Tremayne has gone to bed. Tremayne tosses on a robe and stumbles sleepily to the door]  Mr. David Tremayne?

David Tremayne : Yeah, that's right.

Michael Anthony : I'm sorry to disturb you so late, but, ah, may I come in? I have some extremely good news.

    David Tremayne : Come in.

Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters, opening his briefcase]  I, uh, wanted to give you this cashier's check, made out to you,

    [Tremayne yawns]

Michael Anthony : in the sum of $1,000,000.

    [Gives check to Tremayne]

David Tremayne : What'd you say?

Michael Anthony : I understand that you are an attorney, so I'm certain you can see that the check is valid.

David Tremayne : What is all this? Who would wanna give me a million dollars?

[Tremayne holds up the check to the light]

David Tremayne : A million dollars.

Michael Anthony : All that should really interest you is that you are a millionaire,

[Anthony withdraws a paper from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : just as soon as you sign this document, which states that under penalty of forfeiture, you will not reveal the source or the amount of this money to anyone, except your wife, should you marry.

    David Tremayne : Sign?

Michael Anthony : Yes, right here.

    David Tremayne : Right there.

Michael Anthony : Yes, right there.

[Tremayne signs and Anthony retains the agreement]

Michael Anthony : Thank you, Mr. Tremayne. And while I'm certain that I have completely destroyed any chance of your getting any more sleep tonight, I doubt that you would feel it necessary for me to apologize.

    [Preparing to leave]

    Michael Anthony : Good night.

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing a case history file, to the viewers]  Our story starts in a large American city after a stormy session in the city council, on whether funds should be allocated for slum clearance of a low-income area called Sand Flat.

  • [first lines]

    Michael Anthony : .

    [to the viewers]

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. Until the death of John Beresford Tipton, I served as executive secretary to this remarkable multibillionaire. Mr. Tipton had an insatiable curiosity about people and how money would influence their lives. So, from time-to-time, he would select certain persons and present them with $1,000,000, tax-free. In all the years I worked for Mr. Tipton, I never learned how he chose the recipients of these fantastic gifts. In this magnificent 60,000-acre estate known as Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton lived in pleasant seclusion. I lived there with him, subject to instant summons at any time of the day or night.
