"The Millionaire" Millionaire Dr. Alan March (TV Episode 1957) Poster

Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Michael Anthony enters the science room on the Tipton estate, where he observes John Beresford Tipton, sitting in a high-backed chair, before a topographical survey display. Only his right arm is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, what product do you think of when Pennsylvania is mentioned?

Michael Anthony : Well, sir, coal, I guess.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  Right.

[Tipton hands an envelope over to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Now this is our next millionaire. He lives in a little coal town not far from Scranton.

Michael Anthony : [Studying the name on the envelope]  But what does Dr. Alan March have to do with coal?

John Beresford Tipton : Dr. March's people were coal miners. But right now, he seems to be having trouble deciding his place in the world. Perhaps that check will help him make up his mind.

    Michael Anthony : Yes, sir.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony and until his death, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had the strange hobby of giving away one million dollars, tax-free, to an individual who had never met him, who indeed had never even heard of him. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate. Mr. Tipton was a man of amazingly wide interests - so wide that one never knew what to expect when called into his presence.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters March's office]  I beg your pardon?

Dr. Alan March : What do you want?

Michael Anthony : I'd like a few words in private with you, Dr. March.

Dr. Alan March : I'm sorry but I'm not seeing any more patients today. I suggest you make an appointment with Dr. Kenston.

Michael Anthony : I'm not a patient, Doctor. My name is Michael Anthony. I have a gift for you

    [Opens his briefcase]

    Michael Anthony : .

Dr. Alan March : I'm not interested. I don't believe in giveaways or whatever you're selling.

Michael Anthony : Oh, I'm sure you'll be interested in this.

Dr. Alan March : Mr. Anthony, I don't wish to be rude, but I have a great deal on my mind.

Michael Anthony : Perhaps this will help you, Doctor. You might call it a prescription.

    [giving March a check]

Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check for a million dollars, tax-free. It's yours, Doctor, on one condition:

[producing a form from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : That you sign this document pledging yourself not to divulge the amount of this check or how you got it. If you tell anyone, except your wife, should you marry, you will, of course, forfeit the money.

Dr. Alan March : One of us does need a prescription.

Michael Anthony : [Chuckles]  I think not. All you have to do is sign this document.

Dr. Alan March : Who would want to give this to me?

Michael Anthony : The donor must remain anonymous, Doctor. I can assure you he has his reasons, even though I don't know exactly what they are myself.

Dr. Alan March : Mr. Anthony, this is not a prescription. It's an escape.

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing a file folder, to the viewer]  Dr. Alan March was the son of a coal miner. His story was a very human one, because Alan March was a very human kind of doctor.
