Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Entering prison cell, occupied by inmate Jack Martin, Defense Attorney Irwin, the Prison Chaplain and guards]  I'd like to be alone with Jack Martin for a few minutes.

Jack Martin : Listen, mister, I don't know you. I don't know what you want. And if someone has got to get out, I'll decide who. Till tomorrow, that is.

Irvin : I've got to get back to the hospital, Jack. Doctor's orders.

Chaplain : I'll be outside with the guard, Jack.

    [Irwin and the Chaplain leave]

Michael Anthony : [Opens briefcase and extracts a check. Confidentially to Martin]  This is for you.

[Hands him check. Martin holds it but does not look at it]

Michael Anthony : If you'll endorse it, sign two cards from the bank and a paper for me, I'll deposit the money for you.

    [No response from Martin]

Michael Anthony : That's a cashier's check for a million dollars and every dime of it is yours, if you pledge not to tell anyone who gave you the money or the amount, except your wife, and so far, you're not married.

[Martin finally looks at check and begins laughing hysterically]

Michael Anthony : Stop it! Stop it!

[Martin continues laughing uproariously. Anthony grabs a glass of water and tosses it into Martin's face. Martin reacts by punching Anthony in the jaw. Nearby guards, who have been standing by but out of earshot, rush in]

Michael Anthony : It's alright, guards.

Jack Martin : I'm sorry, mister. I guess I must have gone ape for a minute.

Michael Anthony : I don't blame you, Mr. Martin. What I brought you must be viciously, cruelly ironic. But it's not meant to be that way. You still have a day, you know. Use it! Use it and think hard, think fast.

    [Anthony departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the music room, where he observes Tipton playing an organ. Only Tipton's hands are visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : I have another name and address for you, Mike. And not of a person who greatly, unexpectantly is to become a millionaire.

    Michael Anthony : Yes, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : I wonder, though, if the million dollars will have any effect whatsoever on this young man's life - or death.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Hello. My name is Michael Anthony. During his lifetime, I was Executive Secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire. Now, what made Mr. Tipton particularly unusual was not making money but giving it away, a truly unique habit of frequently giving one million dollars, tax-free, to someone who had never even heard of him. John Beresford Tipton lived at Silverstone, his 60,000-acre estate. One night, I was told that Mr. Tipton wanted to see me in the music room.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers. Holding a file folder]  Here is a case history that developed after Mr. Tipton gave me this envelope that night in the music room. It was addressed to John or Jack Martin, Death Row, State Penitentiary.
