Marcia Henderson: Jean Griffith

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony knocks on the door of Jean Griffith, who responds]  Good evening. Mrs. Jean Griffith?

    Jean Griffith : Yes.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony, Mrs. Griffith. May I come in?

    Jean Griffith : Certainly.

Michael Anthony : [Entering and opening his briefcase]  I have a check for you.

[Hands a check to Jean, who accepts it but doesn't carefully look at it]

Jean Griffith : A check? A refund of some kind?

Michael Anthony : A gift, Mrs. Griffith, from an anonymous donor. There is a condition that goes with the gift

[Produces a document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : You must never reveal how or where you got this money or the amount, except to your husband, of course. If you do, it will be reclaimed on behalf of the donor. Will you sign this pledge to that effect?

[Jean signs the form, which Anthony retains and places back into his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : Thank you. Good night, Mrs. Griffith, and good luck.

    [Turns to leave]

Jean Griffith : [Jean reviews the check for the first time]  Oh, Mr. Anthony! Wait! There must be some mistake. The amount of this check is...

Michael Anthony : [Interrupting]  A million dollars, Mrs. Griffith.

Jean Griffith : But it can't be for me.

Michael Anthony : It is for you. And you may do whatever you like with it - save it, squander it, invest it, give it away, anything. It's now yours, free and clear; even the government tax has been paid. Ah, Mrs. Griffith, I know it's difficult for you to grasp, but it's real, and I'm sure your husband will be very happy to hear about it.

    Jean Griffith : It's real!
