Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the trophy room, which exhibits numerous stuffed animals and mounted heads of big game creatures. Tipton is seated in a high-backed chair at his desk with only his right hand visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

    John Beresford Tipton : Mike,

[Tipton reaches onto his desk and displays a doll-like object]

John Beresford Tipton : ever see a murder weapon like this?

Michael Anthony : It's a voodoo charm, isn't it, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Yes, from Haiti. The natives there, if they want to harm someone, create a doll in the person's image and pierce it with pins or sharp knives, making the person sicken and die. A jealous woman is reported to have killed another woman with this weapon. But I wonder if the jealousy wasn't just as sharp and painful as these knives.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike. I'll want a full report.

Michael Anthony : [Anthony accepts the envelope and bows]  Yes, sir.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters a small art gallery]  Good evening.

    [closes the door]

Michael Anthony : Mr. Jonathan Bookman?

    Jonathan Bookman : Yes.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony.

    [Beginning to open is briefcase]

    Michael Anthony : And I...

Jonathan Bookman : I'm not in the market for any pictures or sketches, Mr. Anthony.

Michael Anthony : [Producing a check from his briefcase]  Oh, I think you'll enjoy looking at this.

Jonathan Bookman : [Starting to walk away]  I really can't look.

[Anthony holds up the check right in Bookman's face]

Jonathan Bookman : What is it?

Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check made out to you for one million dollars.

Jonathan Bookman : [Accepting the check]  I mean, what for?

Michael Anthony : For anything you want to do with it.

Jonathan Bookman : Why should you give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : I would not. Your benefactor must remain anonymous, but the money is yours,

    [Presenting a document]

Michael Anthony : if you'll sign this paper, agreeing to a few minor conditions.

Jonathan Bookman : Cashier's check. What conditions?

Michael Anthony : You must agree not to tell anyone the exact amount you received or the circumstances under which you received it. No one except your wife. If you'll sign right here, please.

[Bookman signs the pledge, which Anthony returns to his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : I suppose it will take a little while to decide, uh, just what you'll do with it.

Jonathan Bookman : No. No, I know what I'll do with it. I... I'll make a dream come true - a dream I've had all my life. Frankly, I... I... I don't understand, but thank you, Mr. Anthony.

Michael Anthony : [Prepares to depart]  Good luck with your dream, Mr. Bookman.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death a few years ago, I was executive secretary to the fabulously wealthy John Beresford Tipton. This is Silverstone, the 60,000-acre estate on which Mr. Tipton lived out the last years of his life. Here he had ample time to indulge his many hobbies, the strangest of which was his habit of giving way to total strangers the anonymous gift of $1,000.000. Mr. Tipton was particularly proud of his Trophy Room, which was like a small museum. And it was here that he sent for me one evening.

  • Michael Anthony : [Holding a file folder, to the viewers]  This is the case history that developed after Mr. Tipton gave me this envelope that night in the Trophy Room. The address was that of a dusty little art gallery over on Third Avenue.
