Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Silverstone gardens, where he finds Tipton watering a bouquet of flowers being held by the large statue of Lady Justice. Tipton is obstructed from the viewers by a column, and only his left arm is visible when he waters the flowers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, do you know why Justice is always pictured as a woman - blindfolded, holding up scales?

Michael Anthony : Well, sir, it's my impression that she's supposed to weigh out justice equally, without being influenced by anything she sees.

John Beresford Tipton : That's about it. But it's not an easy task, and serving justice is a long, hard road to follow. Many men have fallen by the wayside.

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Let's see if this one does - our next millionaire. Give me an exact report on him, Mike.

    [Anthony bows and departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [Michael Anthony enters the office of Michael Holm just as social worker Judy Carroll is departing]  Mr. Michael Holm?

    Michael Holm : Yes.

Michael Anthony : May I speak to you a moment?

    [Holm indicates yes]

Michael Anthony : I have something for you.

Michael Holm : Does your neighbor's dog bark?

    Michael Anthony : My neighbor?

Michael Holm : I'm sorry. What can I do for you?

Michael Anthony : I came here to give you this.

[Anthony hands over a check to Holm]

    Michael Anthony : .

Michael Holm : [Without looking at the check]  What is this? A... a... a summons from my neighbor?

    Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check.

Michael Holm : [Examines check and laughs]  Yeah, it looks real.

Michael Anthony : Oh, it is. It's for a million dollars.

Michael Holm : No. You must be kidding. I mean, nobody writes out checks for a million dollars.

Michael Anthony : Your benefactor, who must remain anonymous, does. It's all yours, tax-free,

    [Anthony produces a document]

Michael Anthony : if you'll sign this agreement not to tell anyone, except your wife if you should marry, the exact amount or the source of your good fortune. If you do, the balance of the money will be reclaimed.

Michael Holm : A million dollars.

Michael Anthony : [Offering pen]  Just as soon as you sign this.

Michael Holm : You know, sir, as an attorney, I've signed a lot of documents.

    [Holm signs the pledge]

Michael Holm : But believe me, sir, this is going to be the last.

    [Returning the agreement to Anthony]

Michael Holm : Did you see that young lady who just went out?

    Michael Anthony : Yes.

Michael Holm : Well, she doesn't know it yet, but, uh, tonight I'm going to convince her tomorrow, she is gonna be Mrs. Michael Holm.

  • Michael Anthony : Our new millionaire was Michael Holm, a young lawyer who longed to be another Clarence Darrow. But for every one great defender of exciting causes, there are a thousand good legal minds that plod along the routine path of minor cases.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death a few years ago, I was executive secretary to one of the most remarkable men this world has ever known: the immensely wealthy John Beresford Tipton. This is Silverstone, Mr. Tipton's fabulous 60,000-acre estate. He was one of the very few men who ever earned, by the use of his phenomenal brain, a fortune that ran not only into the millions, but billions of dollars. After his retirement, he lived in seclusion. He had many hobbies, the most startling of which was making anonymous gifts to various individuals of one million tax-free dollars.
