• Alice : [Anthony is escorted by the maid into the Wellington living room]  This is Mr. Michael Anthony, to see you.

  [the maid departs] 

  Michael Anthony : [Opening his briefcase and withdrawing a check]  Mrs. Wellington, I have something for you. A cashier's check for $1,000,000, tax-free.

  [Anthony hands check to Nancy] 

  Nancy Wellington : [Looking at check]  But why? This can't be money my husband didn't know he had, and there wasn't anyone left to leave us anything.

  Michael Anthony : This isn't a bequest, Mrs. Wellington. It's a gift.

  Nancy Wellington : A gift? From whom?

  Michael Anthony : I can't tell you that, but I assure you, the donor never met you.

  [Again, going to his briefcase to remove a document] 

  Michael Anthony : He has only one requirement: that you tell no one how you came by this money or its exact amount. However, if you ever marry again, you may tell your husband, absolutely no one else. If you do, the money or its residue will be returned to the donor. Will you, uh, sign this agreement to that effect?

  Nancy Wellington : I'll sign it, but I don't understand it.

  [Nancy signs the pledge and Anthony returns it to his briefcase] 

  Michael Anthony : Thank you.

  Nancy Wellington : This is wonderful! Now I can give Paula all the things I've always wanted for her, all the things I've worked for all these years.

  Alice : [the maid enters]  Telegram for you, Mrs. Wellington.

  [Maid gives Nancy the telegram and leaves the room] 

  Nancy Wellington : [as she opens the telegram]  Telegram? Thank you, Nancy. This is probably from someone warning me about a man named Michael Anthony who goes around giving away millions.

  Michael Anthony : [Wryly]  Most probably not.

  Nancy Wellington : [Reading telegram aloud]  'Dear Mother: I've left school because you've done enough for me. It's time for me to do something for myself. All my love, Paula.'

  [to Anthony] 

  Nancy Wellington : My daughter! She's run away.
