- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters the Tipton study, where he finds Tipton seated in a high backed chair at his desk, smoking a cigar. Only Tipton's left arm is visible to the viewers] You sent for me, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: Mike,
- [Tipton reaches for a framed picture of a young boy]
- John Beresford Tipton: look at this.
- [Tipton hands the photograph to Anthony. Tipton chuckles]
- John Beresford Tipton: He was a little self-conscious, wouldn't you say?
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony examines the photo] Charming picture, sir. Who is it?
- John Beresford Tipton: Oh, now, you mean you couldn't see the resemblance? That, Mike, is little Johnny Tipton, age ten.
- Michael Anthony: [Surprised] You, sir?
- [Anthony now examines the photo more closely]
- Michael Anthony: Well, now that you mention it, I can see a certain...
- John Beresford Tipton: [Chuckles] Oh, come on, Mike - you can not! You know, Mike, people don't realize how deep and permanent children's emotions are. Why, I still remember the first girl I fell in love with,
- [Pointing to the photo]
- John Beresford Tipton: when I was wearing that suit.
- Michael Anthony: You do?
- John Beresford Tipton: I wonder if she ever remembered me.
- [Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]
- John Beresford Tipton: Here you are, Mike - our next millionaire.
- [Anthony bows and departs]
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] For Susan Birchard, her first love was Tony. She had not seen Tony since they were childhood sweethearts. Not only had many years passed, there was thousands of miles between them. But Susan never forgot the boy she loved.
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was Executive Secretary to the late multibillionaire John Beresford Tipton. Among my duties was the unique job of delivering $1,000,000, which Mr. Tipton frequently gave away, tax-free, to a total stranger. From his fabulous 60,000-acre estate Silverstone, Mr. Tipton carried on his study of human nature. Every subject in his vast storage of knowledge was material for close analysis, and it was always related to the behavior and destiny of man.
- Mrs. Birchard: [after answering the front doorbell, to Susan] Mr. Anthony wants to see you, Susan.
- [Anthony has been left at the front door but is listening]
- Susan Birchard: Mr. Who?
- Mrs. Birchard: Michael Anthony, he said.
- Susan Birchard: I don't know anybody by that name.
- Mrs. Birchard: But he insists on seeing you alone. He's very polite, but I don't know if you should...
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony has discreetly entered the house] Please, Mrs. Birchard, it's really very important that I see your daughter. I'd only take a minute, I promise you.
- Susan Birchard: It's alright, Mother.
- Mrs. Birchard: I'll wait for Phillip
- [Leaves the room. Anthony makes certain that Mrs. Birchard is gone]
- Michael Anthony: Everyone is so suspicious, but then it isn't often that one meets a total stranger determined to give one $1,000,000.
- Susan Birchard: What are you talking about?
- Michael Anthony: [Opens his briefcase and extracts a check] This is a cashier's check for one million dollars.
- Susan Birchard: What?
- Michael Anthony: Look at it, please. A cashier's check - yours - and the tax has been paid. There's only one condition
- [Pulling a document out of his briefcase]
- Susan Birchard: It isn't true.
- Michael Anthony: I assure you, Miss Birchard, a cashier's check is true.
- Susan Birchard: But why? Who would give me a million dollars?
- Michael Anthony: I cannot tell you that. The benefactor insists on remaining anonymous. But the money is all yours, to do with as you wish, proving you pledge never to reveal the amount or the source to anyone except your husband, when you marry. Your signature, Miss Birchard. That's all.
- [Susan signs the agreement]
- Michael Anthony: Thank you.
- [Anthony return the paper to his briefcase and prepares to depart]
- Susan Birchard: Wait a minute, Mister...
- Michael Anthony: Anthony.
- Susan Birchard: Anthony.
- [Thinks about the name]
- Susan Birchard: Tony.
- Michael Anthony: Michael Anthony. Sometimes I'm call Michael but never Tony. Best of luck, Miss Birchard.
- [Leaves]
