Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the garden, where he discovered Tipton seated in a high-backed garden chair]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, how many sunsets would you say there have been since the beginning of time?

Michael Anthony : Hmmm, quite a few, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : That's the thing I admire about nature. No two sunsets alike, no two people. Each sunset says farewell to the day in a different manner.

    [Chuckles]

John Beresford Tipton : Let's see how this person says 'Hello' to a million dollars.

[Tipton gives envelope to Anthony, who accepts it]

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. I was executive secretary to the late, fabulously wealthy John Beresford Tipton, who pursued the strange hobby of giving away anonymously $1,000,000 to persons he had never even met.

  • Virginia Lennart : [Anthony enters the restaurant and takes a seat at the counter]  What would you like, sir?

Michael Anthony : I'd like a few words.

Virginia Lennart : Rare or medium? My words are very rare.

Michael Anthony : It's a business matter, Miss Lennart.

Virginia Lennart : You know my name? Look, if it's the lawsuit, I saw that customer deliberately put that piece of glass in his plate.

Michael Anthony : [Smiling]  No, no, nothing like that.

    [Turning serious]

Michael Anthony : This is of great importance to you - an inheritance, of a sort.

Virginia Lennart : [Calling to the order window]  Emmy, keep an eye out for a minute, will you?

    Emmy : Will do.

Virginia Lennart : [Motioning to a back room]  Come on in here.

[Anthony follows Virginia into back room, where the scene changes to several seconds later]

Virginia Lennart : A cashier's check! It... it must be good.

Michael Anthony : It won't bounce, if that's what you mean. And it's tax-free.

Virginia Lennart : One million certified dollars.

Michael Anthony : [Producing a document]  If you'll just sign this paper, agreeing to the conditions.

Virginia Lennart : [Suspiciously]  Who am I supposed to murder?

Michael Anthony : The conditions state that you must tell no one where you got the money.

Virginia Lennart : Why would you give me all this money?

Michael Anthony : Oh, I'm not the benefactor, and you will never know who is.

    Virginia Lennart : I still don't understand.

Michael Anthony : Naturally. If you were married, you would be allowed to tell your husband the circumstances, but you may not reveal them to anyone else, or the money will be reclaimed by the donor.

    Virginia Lennart : Oh, I won't tell.

Michael Anthony : Ah, you can say you have a lot of money, but you may not tell the exact amount or circumstances.

Virginia Lennart : [Staring at the check]  An awful lot of money.

Michael Anthony : Yes, an awful lot of money. Now if you'll sign here.

    [Virginia signs]

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing a case history, to the viewers]  The name of the lady whom John Beresford Tipton had selected to be out next millionaire was Virginia Lennart, and she had worked in this little hamburger haven for almost a year.
