- When a woman drives off the road to her death, her body is mysteriously found three mornings later by a psychic known for fudging the truth. Monk must discover if she's telling the truth this time, or else let a murderer go free.
- A panicky woman driver goes off the road thanks to a skid block placed by her husband, former police commissioner Harry Ashcombe. Three mornings later Dolly Flint, a psychic on first name terms with Captain Stottlemeyer (who has arrested her three times on bunko charges) wakes up in her car next to the site of the staged accident. Dolly insists that she was led to the site by the dead woman's "aura," but Monk is suspicious. At the memorial service held in the dead woman's expensive home, Monk figures out what the audience already knows--that Ashcombe is the murderer. With the aid of Ashcombe's mistress, Monk, the captain, and Dolly stage a psychic "reading" to catch the killer.—WyattJones
- A man is talking to his wife, who is driving fast in a lonely road, saying that her dog is wounded. But the dog is fine, and he is installing steel ramps on the road. His wife only sees the ramps when her car is flying off the ramps and falls in a cliff. Monk and Sharona attend a press conference, and the killer is the former police commissioner Harry Ashcombe, who is asking for information about the whereabouts of his missing wife. Soon, the "psychic" Dolly Flint awakes near Kate Ashcombe and calls the police. Dolly is a con artist that was arrested three times for fraud by Stottlemeyer and neither Monk nor Stottlemeyer believe in her "abilities". Monk notes strange things in the location of the accident, and later, he goes with Sharona to the memorial service at Ashcombe's house. He sees Kate's belongings already packed and a muddy pair of boots. Then Monk snoops Ashcombe's correspondence and finds one sent to his former girlfriend, Jenny Cooper. Now Monk suspects that Harry may be the killer of Kate.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- A man on the side of the road is talking on the phone with his wife, as she is driving quickly. He claims that the dog has escaped and is injured. The dog is in fact fine, and the man is setting up steel ramps on the road. His wife's car flies off the ramp goes over a cliff.
The next morning, Sharona ('Bitty Schram' (qv)) and Monk ('Tony Shalhoub' (qv)) attend a press conference. Our mystery man is none other than the former police commissioner ('John Bourgeois (I)' (qv)), who is asking for any information leading to the safe return of his wife. Monk, obviously touched, gets permission from Captain Stottlemeyer ('Ted Levine' (qv)) to offer his assistance. The commissioner accepts his help.
Later, a woman comes to in her car, near the ocean and within easy walking distance of the commissioner's wife's body. She is interrogated by Disher ('Jason Gray-Stanford' (qv)) and an obviously skeptical Stottlemeyer. The reason Stottlemeyer is skeptical? The woman claims to have been led to the spot by the dead woman's "aura." She is in fact local "psychic" Dolly Flint ('Linda Kash' (qv)), whom Stottlemeyer has arrested on three previous occasions for fraud. As Disher leads her away from the crime scene, Stottlemeyer notices Monk investigating the road above. Monk immediately notes that metal was dragged across the road. Stottlemeyer doesn't see the significance, and doesn't think it's important. The three discuss Stottlemeyer's skepticism toward Dolly, Monk's disbelief in psychics in general, and Sharona's belief in their capabilities. The commissioner shows up, and Stottlemeyer goes to meet with him. Monk, meanwhile, notices that a sapling within the path of the car's trajectory remains completely undamaged. Below, the commissioner puts on a fine show of grief at his wife's death and gratitude toward Dolly for "finding" her.
Some time later, Monk "investigates" the crash site rom the safe but distant perch of a piece of wood placed across the mud. Dolly is there, and Sharona is ecstatic to meet her. Dolly is, understandably, a little disturbed by Monk's mannerisms. As Dolly drives away, Monk notices that she had to move the driver's seat of her car forward, and then he totally freaks out when mud spatters his pants. When he regains his composure, he is clearly suspicious.
That afternoon, Stottlemeyer walks into his office to find Monk, Sharona, and the office completely straightened up. Monk believes there's a crime. Stottlemeyer believes Dolly got lucky, since all the information available points to an accidental crash.
Monk and Sharona attend the memorial service. Monk gives the commissioner his favorite book. The commissioner makes a good show of gratitude for Monk's gift and his offer of assistance with the situation. He shakes Monk's hand with both of his, causing Monk to freak out yet again and feel the irrepressible urge to wash his hands. He runs up the stairs to the master bedroom, where he notes the already packed boxes of the wife's possessions and a pair of suspiciously muddy boots. While Monk is taking everything in, the commissioner enters. He suggests that Monk might understand why he would pack everything up. Monk does not understand, having kept everything of Trudy's when she was murdered.
Downstairs, Monk "combs through" the commissioner's mail. He finds a box containing expensive perfume, sent to a former girlfriend of the commissioner's, Jenny ('Jenny Cooper (V)' (qv)). She emphatically declined it. Monk and Sharona go to meet with her. He notes that she was with the commissioner for five years, five wasted years. She opens up - she thinks the commissioner was never going to leave his wife, because of all of her family's money. She suspects the commissioner of murdering his wife, and calls him a "very dangerous man."
While Monk straightens up his fridge, Sharona warns him that he can't take down a former commissioner without solid proof. Which he doesn't yet have - what he has is a hypothesis, in which he knows how the murder was committed but not how Dolly Flint ended up at the scene. Sharona suggests he ask Dolly himself when she goes for a private reading. He does, looking around her house while Dolly "reads" Sharona. Dolly hears Monk snooping and confronts him about not being in the waiting room. She believes his story about wanting a drink, and invites him to join in. He does, obviously hating every minute of it until he brings the subject back around to "finding" the commissioner's wife, a topic Sharona and Dolly would rather not waste time on. Dolly claims to have never had any contact with the woman in her life. She also claims to have taken her sleeping pills that night and not remembering anything else until she woke up in the car. She thinks she "sleep drove."
Sharona would much prefer to discuss her future meeting with a tall, British stranger whose name will begin with a D, and bites Monk's wrist, forcing him to go to the car to get a wipe to clean the germs off. While in the parking lot, he drops a wipe and notices something on the ground when he stoops to pick it up. It's an unusually colored piece of gravel, similar to the one he finds imbedded in the tires of the commissioner's car, that night. The gravel is so rare that the only feasible way for it to be on the driveway at Dolly's is if the commissioner's car was parked in that driveway at some point.
Monk goes to confront the commissioner, who is giving away his wife's dog. The commissioner is initially dismissive, then gets progressively more annoyed as Monk's questions become more pointed. As the commissioner begins to get seriously angry, Sharona defuses the situation and leads an angry Monk away. Monk instead attempts to confront Dolly, who angrily denies any involvement. She admits to having faked all previous psychic visions, but she insists the incident was real. Monk believes that she's telling him the truth.
That night, Jenny gets a call. It's the commissioner. He's angry. He accuses her of talking to the police. She hangs up.
The next morning, Stottlemeyer confronts Monk at the crash site. He's angry that Monk went behind his back and talked to the commissioner. Monk notes that neither of them was able to find the access road that Dolly apparently found for the first time in the dark. Stottlemeyer is angry, but he begins to see Monk's point of view. Dolly was put there to find the car, which had be covered by a mudslide, so the commissioner could collect on his wife's insurance policy. The question is how Dolly got there. Monk has an idea. He needs Stottlemeyer's help.
Dolly is performing a fake seance in the commissioner's house. Jenny is apparently missing, and Stottlemeyer claims Dolly is helping them find her. They find Jenny's sandal in another room. They find more blood and some hair on a poker at the fireplace. She follows the trail out of the house to where they find Jenny "dead" in a shallow grave. Dolly accuses the commissioner. He calls her a fake. Under pressure, he admits to driving Dolly to the crash site. Jenny sits up - she volunteered to help. Stottlemeyer arrests the commissioner.
As Monk and Sharona walk, he encourages her to be more skeptical. A dog runs across their path. It's owner is a tall man with a British accent whose name is Daniel - apparently the man Dolly foretold that Sharona would meet during her reading. He asks conversationally if Sharona and Monk are a couple, causing Sharona to burst into hysterical laughter as the three of them walk on together.
