Warning: Spoilers
Following Robin Thomas, Robin Strasser and series regular Faith Ford, the presence of former cast members from the NBC soap opera indicates that someone behind the scenes was a fan. Chris Rich (who was on the show at the same time as Ford) plays Miller Renfieldwho is taking over as temporary anchor while Jim is away on assignment. Besides the fact that the crew can't stand him, it's obvious that they fear that he may be on a screen test in case they decide to replace Jim permanently. "He's nothing but a superficial blonde airhead" Corky says to audience laughs for obvious reasons as the gang gets together to scheme against Miller. Certainly his perfect smile and dimwitted personality will be easy for them to sabotage, and it's easy for the audience to root for them to succeed because Miller (in spite of the charming performance by Chris Rich) is presented as smug and overly confident. While the precedent of making someone look a fool at their job sounds cruel on the surface, in Miller's case, it's fun to watch. But indeed, like Miller said, he's a bad penny and will be back.
