- Enrique (Rickie) Vasquez: [sees Jordan on the street] Hey.
- Jordan: You need a ride or something?
- Enrique (Rickie) Vasquez: Uh, sure.
- Jordan: So, where we going?
- Enrique (Rickie) Vasquez: Uh... let me think. Um...
- Jordan: Look if you need someplace to crash, I know a place.
- Enrique (Rickie) Vasquez: Thanks.
- Jordan: [looks at Rickie's bruises] My old man used to knock me around, too.
- Enrique (Rickie) Vasquez: He did?
- Jordan: He hasn't done it in a couple years, though. He's too scared. The last time... I threw a chair at him.
- Enrique (Rickie) Vasquez: Well, I'm gonna light a candle for you on Christmas Eve.
- Jordan: Oh yeah? You think that changes anything?
- Enrique (Rickie) Vasquez: Uh-huh.
- Angela: Did you see that girl just now?
- Jordan: What girl?
- Angela: With the guitar.
- Jordan: Well, what's her name?
- Angela: I don't know. She knows Rickie.
- Jordan: He still crashing at that place?
- Angela: What place?
- Jordan: That old warehouse on Tennessee. I brought him there.
- Angela: You brought him somewhere?
- Jordan: Yeah he was, like, I'm gonna light a candle for you and I was like, don't waste your match. I know I shouldn't say stuff like that. I don't even completely mean it.
- [looks at Angela closely]
- Jordan: What? You miss him? Come on, I'll bring you there.
- Patty Chase: [Patty arrives at the church, looking for Angela] Angela!
- [Joy walks up]
- Patty Chase: Oh, never mind.
- [stammering]
- Patty Chase: Uh... I... my daughter has boots just like those. You see, I'm trying to find my daughter, and um...
- Angel: [sympathetically] I know... because I'm no different than her.
- Patty Chase: [shaking her head] No, no... um. You don't understand.
- Angel: Sure I do. I had a mom. Clean sheets, all of that. Another toss of the dice, I could be in her shoes, she could be in mine.
- Patty Chase: [slowly realizing] There but for the grace of God...
- Angel: Go I.
- [pauses, knowing Patty knows her secret]
- Angel: Go ahead, ask me.
- Patty Chase: [awed] Why did you leave home?
- Angel: My mother and I had a fight. The kind of fight where it seems the fight is having you.
- [pauses again]
- Angel: So what else do you want to know?
- Patty Chase: How did you die?
- Angel: [long pause] I froze.
- Patty Chase: [gazes skyward] Oh God... please help me.
- [she closes her eyes then opens them again to find that Joy has gone]
- Angel: [Angela hears singing from down the hall, she follows it to the music room, where Joy is playing her guitar... Angela listens to her play until she's finished] Oh sorry.
- Angela: [awed] No no, keep going. I mean...
- Angel: I was just leaving.
- Angela: 'Cause of me? I'm not even supposed to be in here.
- Angel: Me neither. I hang out here sometimes. It's funny... before, I'd never go to school. And now that I don't go to school, I'm always here.
- [smiles]
- Angela: [smiling back warmly] What was that song? That was... beautiful.
- Angel: It's just this song I fool around with. I'll probably be working on it forever.
- [pauses]
- Angel: I hate to go back out there. I can never get warm... it's 'cause of my shoes.
- [she holds up her foot; Angela sees a large hole in the sole of her boot]
- Angel: See? They're worn clean through.
- [she starts to head for the door, Angela follows her]
- Angel: I had a decent pair, but somebody swiped them.
- Angela: Seriously?
- Angel: [nods] While I was sleeping.
- [beat]
- Angel: You're Angela, right? You're a friend of Rickie's?
- Angela: [bewildered] You know Rickie?
- Angel: [nods] Uh huh.
- Angela: Wait... where is he? I've been really...
- Angel: I know. You don't have to worry. I've been looking out for him.
- Angela: [bell rings] Oh, thank God.
