I think the best episodes of the series had memorable guest stars. Oscar winner Jane Wyman had previously appeared a few episodes back, playing Steve's former girl friend. This time Lew Ayres (fondly remembered as Dr. Kildare at MGM) plays Barbara's late husband's dad.
HOWEVER... there's a neat twist, and the kind of stuff all us kids back in the day loved. Not forget the title, MISTER X.
Ayres plays Professor Harper, and kind of looks the part, but he's also the mysterious type. Or at least has that aura about him. Right off the bat, everyone in the house has questions about this guy, and what's his angle?
Lew Ayres is perfect for the role, especially with a beard, looking much older and distinguished and with more intrigue around him. If you're a TV buff, this may all play into MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. The show was a super hit at the time, and many of the villains on the series had beards and moustaches. Once again, Mister X!

Look for Charles Bateman as Mark Tanner. Charles later was a soap opera regular on SANTA BARBARA.
