THE NEW BREED – Cross The Little Line – 1961
This is episode 15 of the 36 episode run of the Police series, THE NEW BREED. This series which starred, Leslie Nielsen, ran during 1961 and 1962. It is about the cases of a special unit of the L.A. Police department that deals with serial killers and other hard cases.
There has been a big upsurge in drugs in East Los Angeles. The Police are having trouble dealing with the problem. They are unable to track down the smugglers bringing the heroin up from Mexico.
They catch a break when they are contacted by Peter Falk. Falk's wife, Joan Hackett is a junkie and Falk wants to help her get clean. Falk will rat out Hackett's dealer, Victor Bouno, if the Police will get Hackett into a State re-hab clinic.
This information makes it to the desk of the Special Metro squad of the LA Police. The squad, under the command of Leslie Nielson arranges a meet with Falk. Falk tells the Police that Bouno deals out the back door of the employment office he runs for Mexican migrant workers.
Nielson has Falk tell his wife, Hackett, that he met a fellow looking to buy $50,000 worth of junk. Nielson figures, correctly, that Hackett will tell Bouno this tidbit the next time she needs a fix. Bouno is of course all ears to this info. A sale like this would impress his bosses in Mexico.
A deal is soon arranged between Bouno and undercover detective, Greg Roman. Roman is told the drugs will be brought into the country in 3 days. They will then meet and close the exchange.
Nielson and his bunch trail Bouno to the airport when he goes to pick up his courier, Joseph Ruskin. When the deal is finally closed and the drugs delivered, the Police swoop in and put the grip on Bouno and Ruskin. An added bonus for the Police is that Ruskin turns out to be a big wheel in the drug trade. Ruskin is soon ready to trade info for a shorter term in prison.
The Police have Hackett admitted to a drug clinic for a 6 month re-hab stay.
The episode features some nicely done location film work of long gone LA buildings etc. As a fan of 50's cityscapes I quite enjoy the effort made by the series producers.
The only weak bit was the less than stellar Spanish accents used by Falk, Hackett and Bouno. They all are playing Mexican immigrants in the episode.
The show's producer, Quinn Martin, was hitting his stride at this time. Some of his other series include, THE FUGITIVE, THE INVADERS, THE FBI, CANNON, BARNABY JONES and THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO.
