A Stretch
JordanThomasHall8 April 2020
Patty comes home with distressing news that the star basketball player Stretch Edwards (Larry Poland) is moving away a week before the big game. A desperate Martin offers for "the best center Brooklyn Heights High has ever had" to stay with them another week until the game is over. The hulking young man is polite, but breaks a large list of items through his awkwardness. Martin installs a basketball goal for Stretch to practice. Coach Coglan (game show personality Charles Nelson Reilly, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir") comes over to inform Stretch that he's flunking English literature with a 27. However, if he gets a B on his final exam, he will be passed. Cathy records study notes to play in Stretch's sleep and stick in his subconscious to recall the next day at school. The method fails and Stretch confides in Cathy that he feels like a freak and a dunce. She implements a new study strategy using play call numbers for literary figures and dates. Mrs. Coglan's (Jane Connell) zero tolerance for disruptions forces Cathy to find ways to call out numbers to Stretch, but she is quickly made to leave the room. With her unable to help Stretch, pessimism grows for his eligibility for the game. There may be a bigger threat than grades, however.
