That's what they say, and this episode definitely proves the rule. Bill Nighy is fantastic as Alan Sinclair, the rheumatic and overly-possessive father of Gemma (Natalie Morse), a young athletic teen who shows signs of inheriting her father's illness. With Dr Beth Glover (Amanda Burton) on holiday and the surgery in disarray due to workmen installing a new security system, it is only a matter of time before problems arise. Gemma seems hell-bent on getting her man, unfortunately for The Beeches, that man is Dr Jack Kerruish (Kevin Whately). She tells Jack she loves him and dupes her father into thinking that Jack has proclaimed his undying love for her, which leads to Sinclair threatening to have Jack struck off, just when Dr Will Preston (Simon Shepherd) is planning to leave. But as always happens in t'country, everything is sorted out within the hour, Sinclair reluctantly accepts that teenagers lie, and it seems there may be the slightest of sparks between Jack and Beth, as they walk off into the sunset for fish 'n' chips.
