One of the few cases where the judge asks questions of a witness. In most jurisdictions judges may ask questions of witnesses in a preliminary hearing and even during jury trials. An attorney may object to a judge's question if it seems to be inappropriate. In 12 states (but not California) jurors may also ask questions under certain circumstances.
