- Lt. Jacoby: Pass Mr. Gunn to see Streetcar Jones. How'd he ever get a name like Streetcar?
- Peter Gunn: The way I hear it, when he plays, all you gotta do is get on and ride.
- [Gunn has just been severely beaten by two thugs]
- Lt. Jacoby: It's getting so an honest citizen can't walk the streets anymore. They get away with anything?
- Peter Gunn: No, I've still got everything, only they rearranged it a little bit.
- Lt. Jacoby: Looks like a nice, professional job.
- Peter Gunn: Thanks.
- Lt. Jacoby: Did you know them?
- Peter Gunn: No, but I'll catch up.
- Lt. Jacoby: How about a description anyway, just for the sheer joy of it?
- Peter Gunn: Tall, dark hats, nasty dispostions.
- Lt. Jacoby: That makes it easy.
- [first lines]
- Lodi: Thank you. And now for exponents of the new sound, The Big Eye presents for his final performance the man who has found some strange and exciting ways to wander from the tonic to the dominant chord in the company of minor sevenths - Martin Swift!
- [the stage curtain is pulled back revealing a jazz musician who falls off his chair with a knife in his back]
- Lodi: Peter Gunn?
- Peter Gunn: That's right.
- Lodi: My name's Lodi.
- Peter Gunn: First or last name?
- Lodi: The world's too complicated already. One name's enough for anybody.
- Peter Gunn: I'd like to see him.
- Lt. Jacoby: Sure, why not? You'll make Number Two for today.
- Peter Gunn: Who was Number One?
- Lt. Jacoby: His attorney, Gerald Norris. Somebody must be spreading a lot of juice around. A lawyer like Norris doesn't come a dollar a pound.
- Streetcar Jones: Lodi?
- Peter Gunn: Yeah.
- Streetcar Jones: There's a cool, old cat. Swings way back - Oliver, Bechet, Ory... wild sounds. You dig Lodi?
- Peter Gunn: Yeah. You dig murder?
- Peter Gunn: Goodbye, you beautiful doll.
- Mother: Did I tell ya I loved ya?
- Peter Gunn: Yeah, but I don't believe it.
- Mother: Eat your heart out.
- [after Gunn looks up an address in the phonebook, Jacobi scans the same page]
- Edie Hart: Anybody I know?
- Lt. Jacoby: There's Nordstrom, Norrick...
- Edie Hart: ...Norris...
- Lt. Jacoby: There's a whole page of Norrises.
- Edie Hart: There's only one Sally.
