PETER GUNN – The Semi-Private Eye - 1960
This is episode 72 from the 1958 to 1961 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Minerva Urecal as the owner of MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright. Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.
P.I. Peter Gunn, (Craig Stevens) is called to the office of rich business type, Wendell Holmes. Holmes has a problem he would like Stevens to help him with. Holmes' son, Billy Gray, wants to be a Private-Eye and Holmes is frightened that the young man might get himself in harm's way. He offers a large retainer for Stevens to persuade Gray that he should pursue other employment.
While this is going on, Edward Platt, a con man, has swindled a million dollars out of a group of investors. When the Police come a calling, Platt kills both and vanishes with the dough.
Stevens, on his way to pay young Gray a visit stops by to see his pal, Police Lt, Herschel Bernardi. Bernardi is not at all amused with the Gray kid. He is always involving himself in Police matters. If it was not for the family lawyers etc Bernardi would have the young man locked up.
Stevens finally catches up with Gray and tries to talk some sense into the lad. "It is a dangerous business if you don't know what you are doing." Stevens tells Gray. Gray ignores Stevens and heads out to find the new most wanted, Platt.
Needless to say he stumbles onto Platt's hideout and is soon waist deep in trouble. Platt and a couple gunmen he has hired, Boyd Morgan and Richard Reeves soon have Gray, bound and gagged. It is only the timely arrival of Stevens and Bernardi that saves his life.
An enjoyable episode played with a slight comic tone. The director is Gene Reynolds. Reynolds would become famous as a producer, writer and director of the MASH television series. Billy Gray was a regular on the 1954 to 1960 series, FATHER KNOWS BEST.
