PETER GUNN – Witness in the Window - 1960 This is episode 69 from the 1958 to 1961 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Minerva Urecal as the owner of MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright. Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.

Peter Gunn, (Craig Stevens) is hired by lawyer, Charles Aidman. Aidman is being blackmailed by woman he had an affair with. Aidman would like Stevens to make a delivery of cash to the woman. A simple job Aidman says.

Needless to say this turns out to anything but simple. The woman is missing and there has been a murder in the apartment across the way. Stevens runs into his pal, Police Detective Herschel Bernardi at the scene. A little info is swapped both ways. It could be that the murder was done by the woman, Leatrice Leigh whom Stevens was to make the delivery to.

Some digging brings up a few red herrings as well as the corpse of Miss Leigh. It looks like Leigh has killed herself. She leaves a note says she feels bad about the killing of her neighbour. Stevens does not buy it for a minute. He correctly figures it is the lawyer, Aidman tying up a few loose ends from his stepping out on his wife. Aidman had decided to end the blackmail. While busy dispatching Leigh, the old bat next door had seen the whole thing. So Aidman had to kill her as well. He had hired Stevens to give himself an alibi. Too bad for Aidman that Stevens had seen through the plot.

Aidman is soon pulled in and the case is closed.

Witness in the Window

Someone appears to have killed a young woman, Marion Venner (Leatrice Leigh.) Only her neighbour across the building has seen it from her window. She too is killed.

Anthony Scott a lawyer approaches Peter Gunn as he is being blackmailed by Marion Venner. Scott is married an older woman but was enticed into an affair.

Peter Gunn finds Venner but she is dead, apparently a suicide. At the time Lieutenant Jacoby is sniffing around. Maybe he does not buy Scott's story.

The question is does Scott's tale add up to Peter Gunn.

I was not enthused to much about this story. It was evident for me who the killer was from the first shot.
