TV garbage
JohnHowardReid1 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
No doubt as a means of saving money, this bit of television garbage used to often appear on TV in movie time slots. It was in fact never released to theaters at all, and even by the low standards of TV, it is a miserable affair. James Nielson would have to be one of the worst directors of all time. In fact, one wonders what he actually did on the set, aside from crying out, "Action!" and "Cut!" He certainly didn't bother to give the players any pointers. Both Frank Lovejoy and Barbara Hale are normally most competent and even stylish actors. They are both most certainly quite able to deliver pleasing and robust performances. But not in "The Country Husband". In this movie-that-isn't-a-real-movie, they are absolutely lousy. If you are a fan of one or both of these players, avoid this "movie" at all costs. In all respects, it's just a piece of junk, complete with crummy photography by Gert Anderson and truly lousy sets by Robert Peterson. The original story, would you believe is credited to John Cheever. He's an excellent writer. First class! But you'd never believe it if you watch this terrifyingly inept production from Screen Gems. "Gems" yet! Who's kidding who here?
