Classic episode

Warning: Spoilers
This is a fantastic episode and sports some of the best one-liners in the series. Mary decides to get a cleaning job to pay the electric bill and ends up fending off the advances of her sleazy harassing boss, Friel (played by Andy Gray). Rab initially thinks she's having an affair, but the truth eventually comes to light. As usual the comedy and acting is flawless. David Tennant is superb as Davina, the pre-op transsexual barmaid; and his character is dealt with in a natural and very funny way. The scene between Davina and Mr. Friel is a total high point.

A classy, painfully funny episode.

''The man who plays hard, stays hard!''
Rabical-9111 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
With money as tight as ever in the Nesbitt household, Mary is forced to look for a job in order to ease the financial crisis. Eventually, she secures herself a job cleaning offices. Her boss, Mr. Friel, is a lecherous pervert who cannot keep his ( rather sticky ) hands to himself, much to Mary's disgust.

Noticing Mary's strange behaviour, Rab thinks she is losing interest in him and so turns to Jamesie for advice. Jamesie tells him he should try and improve their sex life and so provides him with an aerosol entitled 'Stay Hard' ( so named for reasons I feel I need not go into ). Taking his best mate's advice, he tries to seduce her but is rebuffed. Eventually, he finds out about what Mary is going through at work and plots a cunning revenge on the slimy Friel.

In amongst all this chaos, everyone's heads are turned ( especially Jamesie's ) at the Two Ways by the arrival of Davina, a pre-op transsexual who is working as a barmaid.

Very funny stuff. Davina is played by David Tennant, who at this time was unknown to viewers. I am not a fan of the 'Doctor Who' star but his performance here is in my view on of his better ones. Andy Gray, best known as Chancer from 'City Lights' plays Friel and wonderful he is too. Gray, a handsome looking man, was able to pull off sleazeballs convincingly. His facial expressions and body language are superb. What a pity we don't see him on television much these days.

Funniest bit - finding the 'Stay Hard' bottle in Rab's pyjama pocket, Mary instantly jumps to the wrong conclusion and sprays the aerosol over Rab's tongue, rendering him unable to talk.

A brief review of the Rab C.Nesbit episode Touch
dottyknitter24 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Delightful early performance from David Tennant. He manages to convey a wonderfully lifelike and sweet character (Davina) who is easily three dimensional enough that we can imagine her life outside of working hours even if this is a side we never actually see. He also raises the episode from a potentially embarrassing disaster trying to get its laughs from several serious issues to a genuinely funny little episode that mercifully does not offend. I'm not a fan of Rab C.Nesbit and I probably would not watch other episodes but I am a fan of David Tennant and in that capacity I was not disappointed. Davinas parting line had my howling with laughter and since then whenever I hear Mr Tennant use that particular word (which can not appear in print here)I have awful trouble not giggling along to myself. If you haven't seen it yet treat yourself.

A particular genre of comedy, but essential for David Tennant fans
cassandra200620 October 2006
I really dislike what I have seen of this series. It is a kind of comedy that does not 'travel' well at all, in my opinion, either in time or across national or regional boundaries. It is painfully unsubtle: way too broad, full of rather grotesque characters, and its assault on 'political correctness', which I would normally applaud, and loudly, I found to be often just coarse. This is a TV series that will be found side-splitingly hilarious by some and excruciatingly unfunny by others. That said, the main characters have a reality about them and the performers are usually top-rank and many do their jobs excellently. The setting is effective and the plot scenarios are reasonably workable. As this is a David Tennant board, I will concentrate my remarks on his role as 'Davina', the barmaid. He is sensational. Let there be no mistake about this, nor a sliver of doubt lurking in the corners of anyone's minds. David Tennant, even at an absurdly young age - 22 or 23 - was able to turn in a mature, sensitively nuanced and brilliantly comic performance as the transsexual barmaid, Davina, in this working class Scottish pub,and he is wonderful. Very funny, but in a way that is more restrained and less 'panto' than the often OTT performances of some of the other pub characters. Plus, Costume decreed that Tennant be dressed and made-up like an attractive, if rather conservative, late 20-something woman, and - dammit - he looks far better and more attractive than many women I can think of, despite, in one scene, having his bra hiked up at an angle that any real woman would find excruciating uncomfortable! The punch line in the piece is all Tennant and he delivers magnificently. An often too obvious and, less often funny, script is, at this point, in the hands of a skillful and talented young actor who happens to be very gifted in a variety of acting genres including comedy, making Tennant's final scenes pure magic. I may not want to watch this episode again, but I am glad I did see it once, for Tennant's defining role. This is one actor who has shown great promise since he began in the profession and is worth watching now and in the future, as he grows in maturity as a performer and interpreter.

Notable for an early television appearance by David Tennant. He plays pre-op trans barmaid Davinia at the pub.

The regulars are unsure whether Davinia is a man or a woman, Rab does not care.

He is more bothered as to why Mary is behaving strangely, maybe she does not find Rab amorous enough. Jamesie has a product that could pep up Rab's love life.

However the problem is, Mary has got a new cleaning job to help pay the bills. Only the issue is, her new boss Mr Friel is a lech.

Maybe Davinia may use her charms on the sticky, handsy Mr Friel to help out Rab.

A Rab C Nesbitt look at sexual harassment. Mary and the firm's secretary are at their wit's end with the harassment.

There is no doubt Tennant shines as Davinia, he steals the show.
