Tod and Buz are transporting Blue Murder, a stud stallion, from Idaho to the Montana ranch of its new owner, Jim Bludge. Against Buz's judgment, Tod rescued Blue Murder who was going to be put down because he killed a man due to his naturally wild nature. As such, Jim was able to purchase him for one-fifth of his on-paper value. The three Bludge brothers operate the ranch, they who could not be more different from each other. Jim, the eldest, is the alpha male who likes to show who is boss, which now includes to Blue Murder. Frank, the middle brother, is the one glossy on the surface, he who deals with the customers on the ranch. Cam, the youngest, is the seemingly quiet simpleton, who diligently and quietly does his work. Jim is married to Blossom, who is in many ways as wild as Blue Murder and who has a history with each of the brothers, but each in slightly different ways. Blossie was adamantly against Jim buying the stallion for more reasons that one. Blue Murder ends up being a symbol of Blossie's life on the ranch with the brothers, in more ways than one.
