- A letter reaches Tod from his paternal aunt, Kitty Chamberlain, who he has not seen in approximately twenty years when she ran off from the family never to be heard from again until now. On her deathbed, she has requested that Tod come to visit her. The address provided is in a seedy Los Angeles, California neighborhood, to which Tod and Buz are first introduced by a gang of thugs who would probably want to steal or strip the Corvette if given the opportunity. Although skeptical that this woman who he will be meeting is his Aunt Kitty, especially considering the timing and the neighborhood, Tod can see upon meeting that she indeed is his Aunt Kitty, and is near death, her doctor telling Tod that he can keep her alive for the next day beyond which there are no guarantees. This time frame is important because of Kitty's final request to Tod: help her locate her missing daughter, Carol, a woman Tod did not even know existed. Tod is confused why Kitty would ask him of all people to find Carol, but embarks on this task regardless. Using the only lead that Kitty can provide, Tod and Buz follow a path through the underbelly of Los Angeles. One of Tod's discoveries surprises him. He will also eventually learn why Aunt Kitty made this request specifically to him, he who reports news that she probably was not expecting.—Huggo
