While Fred does quit smoking after this episode, Redd Foxx, in real life, was a four or five pack a day smoker and never did quit.
Fred's line "Smoking less, but enjoying it more" is a play on the 1960s advertising slogan for Camel cigarettes, which was "Are you smoking more now but enjoying it less? Have a real cigarette--Camel."
The episode name was taken from the slogan of the American Lung Association at the time.
Fred mentions a friends of his who got run over by a tobacco truck as someone who "was killed by cigarettes." This was a joke Redd Foxx used in his stand-up act when discussing his smoking habit.
