The wrap up to this episode is a reminder of how very well written and how very serious this show can be. Dick Van Dyke plays an aged doctor so out of touch with modern medical methods that he almost costs a patient his life. JD has the sad duty of letting Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins) know what is going on, and Kelso has a heart-to-heart with Van Dyke in the show's closing moments that is at once heart-breaking and ennobling. We get to see Kelso at his absolute professional best, just this one time. And Van Dyke's reaction to what Kelso tells him may surprise you. It wasn't what I expected, for sure. Van Dyke and Jenkins are at the top of their form.
