Lionel and Martha becomes hostages, and it becomes a battle between father and son
j_angelbaby27 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This episode reveals what a monster Lionel is, but also how Lex is so rebelling against his father that he is just like him.

Clark is concerned about his parents relationship and gets Lex to help, which just makes Jonathan mad. While doing a service to the Kents, Lex has also hired people to bug his father's office. When Lex discovers his father is in the building that day, he asked it to be stopped, but they take matters into there own hands as they hold Lionel and Martha as hostages.

I especially liked the ending, after Martha and Lionel are released. You can see the pain in Lex's eyes, watching the Kent family embrace against his own broken relationship with his father. The music just intensifies it.

Not really a review, but an observation

First an explanation. I just recently began watching this series so I have no idea what will happen in the subsequent episodes. I have made only one post so far, after watching the first few episodes. I mentioned at that time that it was like Superboy meets the X-Files. So far it still looks that way.

As for this episode: A really good thriller. I have one problem with it, however. At the end, Martha puts the octagon in a tub of flour under the counter. Obviously the writers have her do this so that someone with not so good intentions will find it in a future episode. The smart thing to do would have been to give it to Clark, who would be able to hide it someplace that only a person with his super powers would be able to find it.

Finally some real action...
m-4782629 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Visage is a decent filler episode. It helps closing the door on both the Whitney and Tina characters. Two season one antagonists. Have Lex and Helen's relationship begin. And that gorgeous « mad world » cover, as lieu of a closing song, when Lana confides in Clark, amongst the cave paintings. It had funny moments too and a pretty gory death scene. But Insurgence is where the stakes are high. It's full of revelations, fights and deceptions. It may take some time to take off. But the opening scene is great. And the heist at Luthor Corp, is gripping. However, it gets very tiring to have kryptonite show up somehow, every time Clark is at the verge of winning the battle. Because writers needed a reason, to make the « suspense » last a little longer... Lana keeps on with her little family drama. And there's an interesting parallel between both the Luthor and Kent family. Before the episode ends on a shocking note, when sweet and « innocent » Martha, is shown hiding the spaceship key, inside a floor bin. The music department did a great job too, picking songs for the episode. When each of them, capture their scenes mood to a T. It's a must see of the season.

One of the best Smallville episodes
dar48215 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best episodes of Smallville. Most episodes feel like mixes of Sci-Fi thriller and teen drama. However, this truly shows the drama that Smallville can reach. The tension between the Kent family and Luthor family is harsh. Martha must decide between her future and her family. Luthor pushes her towards the job he has for her, but she refuses just like she does with her father's expectations. She is fighting him just as she has fought her father throughout her life. The tension between Lex and Jonathan Kent hits high heat. Lex is kind enough to give the Kent's a meaningful anniversary dinner, but Jonathan swaps his gesture down with his usual banality towards the Luthors. Even when Jonathan is asking for a simple helicopter ride to Metropolis to make sure his wife is alright, he agonizes over every word and his question has to be finished by Lex.

It doesn't matter if you don't like Smallville, this is a completely standout episode. I suggest this to anyone that enjoys television drama.

A Good Reason to Work with Lionel Luthor
claudio_carvalho27 April 2006
When Lex Luthor loses a US$ 150,000,00.0 contract to Luthor Corp., he finds that his mansion was bugged by his father. He hires a team to bug Luthor Corp. expecting to find the building empty since it is Sunday, but Lionel Luthor assigns Martha Kent for a work in his office with him. Jonathan Kent becomes very upset since it is the day of their weeding birthday and he was planning a picnic with Martha. Lex call off the action, but the leader of the group of industrial spies is killed by a member that wants to steel Lionel's safe. Martha and Lionel become hostages of the criminals, and when they open the safe, a great secret is disclosed. Meanwhile, Lana schedules a meeting with Mr. & Mrs. Small in Talon to know Jennifer Small, who advises Lana about her husband.

"Insurgence" is one of the best episodes of "Smallville". The secret disclosed in the safe of Lionel Luthor is amazing, and Clark Kent practically flies for the first time. The behavior of Jonathan Kent with Lex Luthor is excessively rude, and I do not understand why Lex continues to be so gentle with him. My vote is ten.

An INCREDIBLE TV episode on its own, let alone 'Smallville'
Rcwilkinson12319 September 2007
With possibly the exception of the Season 1 finale "Tempest," Insurgence is the best 'Smallville' episode up to this point.

Another exciting element of this episode was that this was the first to present Metropolis, Superman's turf, to the watching audience.

Th show begins with an enraged Lex Luthor, who rightfully should be after discovering that his father has placed hidden cameras throughout the house in order to spy on his son. In retaliation, Lex plans an interrogation on the LuthorCorp building in Metropolis, believing that no one will be there with the interrogation planned on a Sunday. Coincidentally, however, Martha was asked by Lionel to work that day, upsetting her husband, who was planning a special anniversary event that day. Lex has seconds thoughts after learning that Martha is in the building, but before Lex can stop his team, one of the members, obsessed with what is in Lionel's sealed vault, holds up the building. Extreme tension builds between Jonathan and Lex, Jonathan and Lionel, and Clark and Lex, for the responsibility that the Luthors have on their hands for putting Martha in danger. As the episode nears its climactic and riveting conclusion, something incredible is revealed to have been hiding in the vault, and Clark, desperate to save his mother, goes to a drastic measure pushing even the limits of his unique abilities...

Standing on its own, 'Insurrection' is a very special episode for its tension, conflict and excitement.
