Prior to launching the assault on the communications array, 2nd Lt. James Herrick motivates his men by reciting the actions and decorations of Sergeant Major Daniel "Dan" Joseph Daly during World War I. Herrick leaves off the fact that SMG Daly had already been awarded two Medals of Honor prior to the war (one of only 19 individuals so decorated). He also fails to mention among the decorations Daly received from the French Government was the Médaille Militaire, at the time that nations second highest decoration as well as the Fourragère in addition to the Croix de Guerre with Palm (not four palms) Herrick notes.
SMG Daly's exploits remain part of the Marine Corps History taught to all Marine Recruits.
