- Jim Hardie is sent to the town of Still River to investigate a $20,000 insurance claim. When he arrives the local agent can't be found. Jim breaks into the office where he finds the agent dead in what looks like an apparent suicide.
- Jim Hardie arrives in the town of Still River at the Wells Fargo office which he finds locked. Next door he asks a man repairing a boat if he has seen Spencer, the local agent. The man has not so Jim decides to enter the office through a window that is unlocked. As he enters the man stops him saying he is the Marshal. After showing his Wells Fargo identification, Marshal Williams lets him go. Inside Jim finds Spencer's body with a pistol in his right hand the result of an apparent suicide. Jim calls the Marshal and then asks to leave everything until he has the photographer he noticed come to take a picture of the scene. He then looks for the mayor who owns many of the businesses including the saloon. There he runs into an old friend from San Antonia, Texas, Jessica Brown who plays the piano. Jim's suspicions appear to have merit when a local gunman tries to kill him or force him out of town.—Anonymous
